“Getting it Right”

The 2015 Annual Conference and AGM was held at Winterbourne House, Edgbaston, Birmingham and was attended by just under 90 delegates.

At the AGM in the morning, it was decided that the Federation should incorporate as a company limited by guarantee with effect from 1 January 2016 under the changed official name of The National Federation of Prostate Cancer Support Groups governed by Articles of Association. You can see the slides from the morning session here which explain this in more detail and also show the Chairman's Report, the Chief Executive's Report and the Finance Report. It was also agreed that we should have an Honorary President and Sandy Tyndale-Biscoe was elected for a three-year period. The morning session ended with a song from Bob Arthy of Friends of Prostate Sufferers (the FOPS) which you can view here.

In the afternoon, we had presentations from Professor Nick James on the results of the STAMPEDE trial and Dr Jonathan Rees - a member of our Clinical Advisory Board - on prostate cancer from the primary care perspective. To watch Prof James' presentation, click here and Dr Rees', click here.

“Screening for prostate cancer - are we making progress?”

The 2012 Annual Conference and AGM was held on 25 April in the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa.

The theme for the event was prostate cancer screening, a topic close to the hearts of all prostate cancer patients, but not, regrettably to those of clinicians and public health experts. What can we patients do in the face of continuing denial of the value of PSA testing by those in a position to save lives of thousands of men? Speakers, who represent both screening enthusiasts and sceptics, included Professors Ken Muir of Warwick University and Norman Maitland of York University.

The event was attended by over 80 participants, representing 25 Member Organisations. A full report of the Conference can be found in Prostate Matters Issue 16.

The Minutes of the 2012 AGM can be found here.

“Living Well with Prostate Cancer”

The 2010 Annual Conference and AGM was held at Penny Brohn Cancer Centre, Chapel Pill Lane Pill, Bristol, BS20 0HH on Saturday 24 April.

The programme of speakers covered two themes: Living well with Prostate Cancer, and, as a follow up to the Great PSA Debate, a report on a trial that the Federation is sponsoring entitled The Prostate Cancer Risk Evaluation Study (RISKMAN), which will examine the use of risk assessment tools in association with PSA-based screening. This trial is supported by both sides of the PSA argument and, it is hoped, will move the debate a step towards realistic prostate cancer screening. Federation members have an important role to play in the support and promotion of this trial.

Full details of the Annual General Meeting can be found in the Minutes. In summary:

  • The Hon Chairman reported the activities of the Federation over the year
  • The Hon Treasurer reported the Financial state of the Federation
  • The Hon Secretary reported on membership and the Prostate UK Grants
